In short

Navratri Day 1 falls on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The goddess is Maa Shailaputri, the colour is orange, the bhog is pure cow ghee and her graha is the Moon. Here is the full puja vidhi, her mantra and dhyana shloka, and Ghatasthapana times worked out for 20 cities from local sunrise - including why Abhijit Muhurat is not available anywhere in North America this year.

Navratri Day 1 is Sunday, October 11, 2026, the day of Ghatasthapana and of Maa Shailaputri, the first of the nine forms of Durga. Wear orange, offer pure cow ghee as bhog, and chant 'Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah' 108 times. In Vedic astrology Shailaputri governs the Moon, so this is the day for anyone whose mind has felt unsteady, whose sleep is broken or whose Moon is weak in the birth chart. The Kalash must be installed while Pratipada tithi is running, and this is where a copied Indian calendar fails readers abroad: Pratipada ends at 9:32 PM IST, which is 12:02 PM in New York and 9:02 AM in California. This guide gives the full puja vidhi, the mantras, the Moon remedy, and Ghatasthapana windows computed separately for each city's own sunrise.

Pratipada is the first lunar day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin. Ghatasthapana, the installation of the Kalash that seats the Goddess for nine nights, is performed once, on this day, before Hindu midday. Everything that follows across the next eight days is worship around that Kalash.

Who Is Maa Shailaputri?

Shailaputri means daughter of the mountain - Shaila is rock or mountain, putri is daughter. She is Parvati in her first and most elemental form, born to Himavan after her previous life as Sati, the wife of Shiva who gave up her body in the fire of her father Daksha's sacrifice when he insulted her husband. Reborn as the mountain's daughter, she returns to Shiva again. The first day therefore begins with a story of return: devotion that survives even its own ending.

She is shown riding Nandi the bull, holding a trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left, with a crescent moon on her forehead. The bull is steadiness and dharma, the trident is the three gunas held in balance, the lotus is purity rising through mud. She is worshipped first because she is the ground - in yogic terms the Muladhara chakra, the root on which every higher practice of the next eight nights stands.

Maa Shailaputri and the Moon: The Astrology of Day 1

Each of the nine forms of Durga is linked in Jyotish to one of the nine grahas, and Shailaputri rules Chandra, the Moon. The Moon is the mind - memory, emotional stability, sleep, the mother, and the general sense of being safe in one's own life. A weak or afflicted Moon shows up as anxiety without a clear cause, mood that swings with small events, poor sleep and difficulty with the mother or with home.

The 2026 sky makes this pairing unusually literal. Navratri opens one day after the new Moon, with the Sun and Moon both in Chitra nakshatra, and the Moon crosses from Virgo into Libra at 10:03 AM IST on Day 1. A Moon this close to the Sun is at its weakest in the whole lunar month - which is exactly why the festival begins here, with the goddess of the Moon, and builds strength night by night as the Moon waxes toward Ashtami.

Worship of Shailaputri is especially recommended if the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio in your chart, sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, is joined by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, or if you are running a Moon Mahadasha or Antardasha. People born with a Cancer Moon or Cancer ascendant, where the Moon is the ruling planet, benefit directly.

Ghatasthapana Time 2026 in India, USA, Canada, UK, UAE and Australia

Ghatasthapana has two requirements: Pratipada tithi must be running, and it should fall in the first third of the day, before Hindu midday. Every window below starts at local sunrise and ends at the earlier of those two limits, calculated for that city rather than converted from IST.

This produces the single most important finding for North America. Pratipada ends at 12:02 PM Eastern and 9:02 AM Pacific on October 11, so the Abhijit Muhurat around local noon - the usual fallback when Chitra and Vaidhriti cannot be avoided - has no Pratipada left in it anywhere in the USA or Canada. Install the Kalash in the morning. On the West Coast the window is under two hours, and the slice from 8:35 AM to 9:02 AM PDT is the cleanest of all, because Vaidhriti Yoga has ended by then while Pratipada is still running.

Maa Shailaputri Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

On Day 1 the Shailaputri puja is performed immediately after the Kalash is installed, in the same sitting. On every later day the sequence below is repeated with that day's goddess, mantra and bhog.

  • Preparebathe before sunrise, wear orange or clean light clothes, and clean the north-east corner of the home
  • Ghatasthapanasow barley in a clay pot of soil, place the water-filled Kalash with mango leaves and a red-wrapped coconut on it, and tie moli three times round its neck
  • Sankalpawith water, rice and a flower in your right hand, state your name, gotra, the nine-day vow you are taking and its purpose
  • Invokeplace a picture or idol of Maa Shailaputri beside the Kalash and recite the dhyana shloka
  • Offersindoor, akshat, white or red flowers, an orange chunari, incense and a ghee lamp
  • Bhogpure cow ghee, or a sweet made in ghee; tradition links this offering to freedom from illness
  • Chant'Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah' 108 times on a rudraksha or crystal mala
  • Readthe Durga Chalisa, or your day's portion of the Durga Saptashati if you are reading the full text across Navratri
  • Aartiperform the Durga aarti, then light the Akhand Jyot if you intend to keep it burning for nine nights

Maa Shailaputri Mantra, Stuti and Dhyana

Use the short mantra for japa, the stuti for the opening of the puja, and the dhyana shloka while visualising her form. Pronunciation matters less than steadiness of attention; the tradition is clear that a mantra said with focus outweighs a perfect one said absent-mindedly.

  • Mool mantraOm Devi Shailaputryai Namah
  • StutiYa Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Shailaputri Rupena Samsthita, Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah
  • DhyanaVande Vanchhitalabhaya Chandrardhakritashekharam, Vrisharudham Shuladharam Shailaputrim Yashasvinim
  • Beej mantra (as taught in many sadhana lineages)Hreem Shivayai Namah
  • Count108 repetitions, morning or evening, facing east or north-east

The nine-colour sequence follows the weekday on which each day of Navratri falls, which is why it changes every year. In 2026 the festival opens on a Sunday, the Sun's day, and the colour is orange - the colour of fire, of the rising Sun and of renunciation. It suits Shailaputri well: the first day is about beginning with energy and committing to the vow.

The full 2026 sequence for India: Day 1 Shailaputri (Oct 11), Day 2 Brahmacharini (Oct 12), Day 3 Chandraghanta (Oct 13), Day 4 Kushmanda (Oct 14), Day 5 Skandamata (Oct 15), Day 6 Katyayani (Oct 16), Day 7 Kalaratri (Saptami, Oct 17 and 18), Day 8 Mahagauri (Durga Ashtami, Oct 19), Day 9 Siddhidatri (Maha Navami, Oct 19, with Navami tithi running to 12:51 PM IST on Oct 20), and Vijayadashami on Tuesday, October 20.

Rules for the Navratri Fast Beginning on Day 1

The sankalpa you make on Day 1 fixes the shape of your fast for the whole festival. Choose something you can actually keep. The tradition treats all-nine-day fasting, fasting on the first and last day, and fasting on Ashtami alone as equally valid; it treats breaking a declared vow casually as the real fault.

  • Allowed (vrat foods)fruit, milk and curd, sabudana, kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut) and rajgira flour, potatoes, sendha namak (rock salt)
  • Avoidgrains, ordinary table salt, onion, garlic, meat, eggs and alcohol
  • Akhand Jyotif you light it, keep someone at home and enough ghee or oil for it not to go out
  • Barleywater the sown barley lightly every morning
  • Healthpregnant women, diabetics and anyone on medication should keep a phalahar (fruit and milk) fast rather than a nirjala one

The takeaway

Navratri Day 1 2026 falls on Sunday, October 11: Ghatasthapana, Maa Shailaputri, orange, and an offering of cow ghee. Install the Kalash in your own city's morning window - and if you are in North America, do not wait for Abhijit Muhurat, because Pratipada is over by noon. As the goddess of the Moon, Shailaputri is the right starting point for anyone whose mind has been restless; nine nights of steady practice that begin with a steadied mind tend to be kept. If you want to know whether the Moon is the weak link in your own chart, and which of the nine days carries the remedy that matters most for you, book a 1-on-1 video consultation with Astrologer Sheela Goklani.
