In short
Durga Puja 2026 runs from Bodhon on the evening of Friday, October 16 to Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday, October 21, with Mahalaya on Saturday, October 10. Maha Ashtami is Monday, October 19 - but Sandhi Puja is at 7:26 AM by the Gupta Press panjika and 10:28 AM by Bisuddha Siddhanta, and the two panjikas also disagree on Saptami, which is why Bengal has two Saptamis this year. Here is the full schedule, Maa Durga's arrival and departure vahana, Sandhi Puja for 20 cities, and the dates for pujas in the USA, UK, Australia and the Gulf.
Durga Puja 2026 begins with Mahalaya on Saturday, October 10 and runs from Bodhon on the evening of Friday, October 16 to Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday, October 21. Maha Ashtami, with Pushpanjali and Kumari Puja, is Monday, October 19, and Maha Navami is Tuesday, October 20. This year the two Bengali panjika traditions disagree more than usual. By the Gupta Press and Benimadhab Shil panjikas, Saptami is present at two sunrises - October 17 and 18 - and Sandhi Puja falls at about 7:26 AM to 8:14 AM IST on October 19. By the Bisuddha Siddhanta panjika, Saptami is October 18 alone and Sandhi Puja is at 10:28 AM to 11:16 AM IST. The difference also changes Maa Durga's arrival vahana: a horse by one reckoning, an elephant by the other, with departure by boat in both. For Bengalis abroad there is a rare piece of good news: in the USA and Canada, the true Saptami and Ashtami fall on the weekend of October 17 and 18. This guide gives the full schedule, explains the panjika split, lists Sandhi Puja for 20 cities and gives the correct local dates for pujas in North America, Britain, Australia and the Gulf.

Why Durga Puja 2026 Has Two Saptamis: Gupta Press vs Bisuddha Siddhanta
Bengal has two living panjika traditions. The Gupta Press and Benimadhab Shil panjikas calculate tithis by the classical Surya Siddhanta. The Bisuddha Siddhanta panjika uses modern astronomical positions. Most years the two land on the same days with tithi ends a little apart. In 2026 the gap is close to three hours, and it falls right across the most sensitive part of the Puja.
By the Gupta Press panjika, Ashtami tithi runs from 5:52 AM on October 18 to 7:49 AM on October 19. Saptami therefore covers sunrise in Kolkata on both October 17 and October 18, giving two Saptamis; the Nabapatrika is bathed on the morning of Saturday, October 17. By Bisuddha Siddhanta, Ashtami runs from 8:30 AM on October 18 to 10:52 AM on October 19, Saptami begins only after sunrise on the 17th, and Maha Saptami is Sunday, October 18. Both agree that Ashtami is present at sunrise on Monday, October 19 - so Maha Ashtami, Navami and Dashami fall on the same days in either system.
The practical consequence is the time of Sandhi Puja and the Ashtami Pushpanjali. A pandal following Gupta Press must finish Ashtami Anjali early on October 19 and begin Sandhi Puja at about 7:26 AM. A pandal following Bisuddha Siddhanta has until about 10:28 AM. Neither is wrong; each is internally consistent. Follow the niyomaboli your pandal or temple announces, and do not mix times from one panjika with dates from the other.

Maa Durga's Arrival and Departure 2026: Horse, Elephant and Boat
Bengali tradition reads the year ahead from the vahana on which the Goddess arrives and leaves. Her arrival is set by the weekday of Saptami and her departure by the weekday of Dashami. Sunday or Monday brings her on an elephant (gaja); Tuesday or Saturday on a horse (ghotak); Wednesday by boat (nouka); Thursday or Friday by palanquin (dola).
Because the panjikas disagree on Saptami, they disagree on the arrival this year. By the Gupta Press panjika Saptami begins on Saturday, so the Goddess arrives on a horse - 'chhatrabhanga sturangame', read as political upheaval and unrest. By Bisuddha Siddhanta Saptami is Sunday, so she arrives on an elephant - 'gaje cha jaladam devi shasyapurna vasundhara', good rain and a full harvest. Dashami is Wednesday in both, so she departs by boat - 'shasya vriddhistatha jalam', a rich harvest but also heavy water and the risk of floods.
These readings belong to mundane astrology, the astrology of nations, weather and harvests. They describe the year for the land as a whole, not for any one person. What the year holds for you is read from your own birth chart.
- Arrival (Gupta Press - Saptami on Saturday)horse - unrest, change in leadership
- Arrival (Bisuddha Siddhanta - Saptami on Sunday)elephant - good rain, abundant harvest
- Departure (Dashami on Wednesday)boat - plentiful crops, but excess water and floods
- Weekday ruleSunday or Monday elephant; Tuesday or Saturday horse; Wednesday boat; Thursday or Friday palanquin
Durga Puja, Rahu and Your Own Kundali
In Jyotish, Durga is the deity invoked to control Rahu - the graha of illusion, obsession, foreign lands and sudden reversals - and recitation of the Chandi, the Durga Saptashati, is the classical remedy for an afflicted Rahu. Rahu has been in Aquarius since May 2025 and moves to Capricorn on December 5, 2026, so this is the last Durga Puja of the current Rahu cycle. If the past eighteen months have been unsettled in ways you could not explain, Ashtami Pushpanjali and Sandhi Puja this year are the natural place to close that chapter.
There is a second reason Puja matters astrologically in Bengali households. The month after Puja leads into Agrahayan, which begins in mid-November and is Bengal's busiest wedding month. Many proposals are first discussed over Puja and Bijoya visits, and the kosthi - the horoscope - is matched before a family commits. A guna score alone is a thin basis for that decision: it says nothing about the 7th house, Venus, Mangal Dosha cancellations or whether both partners' Dasha periods support marriage at that time.

Sandhi Puja Time 2026 for 20 Cities
Sandhi Puja is tied to the moment Ashtami ends, not to sunrise, so it happens at the same instant everywhere - which puts it at night across North America. Times below follow Bisuddha Siddhanta and modern calculation. For Gupta Press, subtract about three hours and two minutes: 7:26 AM IST becomes 9:56 PM EDT on October 18, 2:56 AM BST and 12:56 PM AEDT on October 19.

Durga Puja 2026 in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and the Gulf
Abroad, the dates follow the tithi at your own sunrise, which is why they do not always match Kolkata. In 2026 North America gets an unusually convenient calendar: Saptami is Saturday, October 17 and Ashtami Sunday, October 18, so community pujas held on that weekend are on the true tithis rather than a convenient substitute. Britain shares the same Saptami and Ashtami. Australia, Singapore and the Gulf keep Ashtami on Monday, October 19, like Kolkata.
Many committees abroad still follow Kolkata's dates, or simply the nearest weekend, and both are long-established practice. If your family keeps the fast and Anjali at home, use your local dates below. On the US West Coast Shashthi ends at 5:25 PM PDT on October 16, so a home Bodhon there belongs before that time or on the evening of Thursday, October 15.

The takeaway
Durga Puja 2026 opens with Mahalaya on October 10 and runs from Bodhon on the evening of October 16 to Bijoya Dashami on October 21, with Maha Ashtami on Monday, October 19. Sandhi Puja is at about 7:26 AM IST by the Gupta Press panjika and 10:28 AM IST by Bisuddha Siddhanta, so follow your pandal's niyomaboli. In North America the true Saptami and Ashtami fall on the weekend of October 17 and 18. And if Puja and Bijoya bring a proposal to your family this year, as they often do in the run-up to Agrahayan, book a 1-on-1 Kundali matching consultation with Astrologer Sheela Goklani to have both charts read in full before anyone commits.
