What is Lagna in Vedic astrology?

Lagna, or the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It becomes the 1st house of your chart, so every other house - wealth, marriage, career - is counted from it. Vedic astrologers treat the Lagna as the most personal point in the horoscope.

Why do I need my exact birth time and place?

The whole zodiac rises over the horizon once a day, so the Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours and moves about one degree every four minutes. The rising sign also depends on latitude and longitude, which is why two people born at the same moment in Delhi and London have different Lagnas.

Is the Vedic Lagna the same as the Western rising sign?

No. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical zodiac of Western astrology, so most people's Vedic Lagna is one sign earlier than their Western rising sign. Only someone with a Western ascendant in the last few degrees of a sign keeps the same sign.

Lagna, Rashi or Sun sign - which matters most?

In Jyotish the Lagna describes the body, personality and life direction, the Moon sign (Rashi) describes the mind, and the Sun sign the soul's authority. Horoscopes in India are read from both the Lagna and the Rashi; the Sun sign plays a smaller role than in Western astrology.

My Lagna is at 0° or 29°. Is it reliable?

Only if the birth time is accurate to a few minutes. At the edge of a sign the Lagna can tip into the neighbouring sign with a small time error. The calculator shows the clock times your Lagna held on the birth day, so you can see how much margin you have.

How the Lagna is calculated

The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in turn. The calculator finds the local sidereal time at your birth place, works out which degree of the ecliptic was crossing the horizon, and converts it to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa used by Indian Panchangs. Houses are then counted whole-sign from the Lagna, the traditional Parashari method.

Signs do not rise at an even pace. Near the equator each takes about two hours, but at higher latitudes some signs rise in barely an hour and others take three - one more reason a birth in Toronto or London needs its own calculation rather than an IST conversion.

What to do with your Lagna

The Lagna lord is the planet that represents you in the chart; its house and strength say a lot about where your energy goes. From the Lagna you can read the 7th house for marriage, the 10th for career and the 9th for fortune.
