In short
Navratri Day 7 is Saturday, October 17, 2026, the day of Maa Kalaratri: wear grey, offer jaggery (gur) as bhog and chant 'Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah' 108 times, ideally after sunset. Saptami tithi runs from 5:55 AM IST on October 17 to 8:29 AM IST on October 18, so in India and the Gulf it is present at two sunrises and Durga Ashtami moves to October 19. In the USA, Canada and the UK Saptami is October 17 only, while Singapore, Australia and New Zealand keep it on October 18 - but the Saptami night for Kalaratri's puja is Saturday evening everywhere.
Navratri Day 7 is Saturday, October 17, 2026, dedicated to Maa Kalaratri, the dark, fearsome form of Durga who destroyed the demon Raktabija and who is also called Shubhankari, the one who brings auspiciousness. Wear grey, offer jaggery as bhog, and chant 'Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah' 108 times. In Vedic astrology Kalaratri governs Saturn - and Day 7 falls on a Saturday, Saturn's own day, while Saturn is retrograde in Pisces. That makes it the single best day of the year to combine Durga worship with a Shani remedy, particularly for Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs under Sade Sati. One important calendar note: in India Saptami tithi is present at sunrise on both October 17 and 18, so Saptami continues on Sunday and Durga Ashtami falls on Monday, October 19. In the USA, Canada and the UK, Saptami is a single day and Ashtami falls on October 18.

Is Saptami on October 17 or 18 in 2026? Date by Country
Every Hindu festival day is fixed by the tithi present at local sunrise. In 2026 the Moon is moving slowly, and Saptami lasts twenty-six and a half hours: from 5:55 AM IST on October 17 to 8:29 AM IST on October 18. In Delhi, sunrise on the 17th is 6:23 AM - after Saptami has begun - and sunrise on the 18th is also 6:23 AM - before it ends. Saptami is therefore present at two sunrises. This is a vriddhi, or increase, of the tithi, and it is why most Indian calendars show Saptami on both October 17 and 18, and Durga Ashtami on Monday, October 19.
Abroad the picture is different. In New York, Saptami begins at 8:25 PM on October 16 and ends at 10:59 PM on October 17, so it touches only one sunrise, and Ashtami is present at sunrise on Sunday, October 18. The same is true across the USA, Canada and the UK. In Kolkata, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand the doubling fell on an earlier tithi, so Saptami there is Sunday, October 18 alone.
This matters because Kanya Pujan, the Ashtami fast and Sandhi Puja follow the tithi, not the day count. If you are in North America or Britain and follow an Indian calendar, you will be a day late for Ashtami.

Who Is Maa Kalaratri? Meaning, Story and Why She Is Called Shubhankari
Kalaratri means the night of time, or the dark night that ends all things. In the Devi Mahatmya, the demon Raktabija had a boon that every drop of his blood falling to the ground would produce another demon like himself. The Goddess took this fearsome form, and she drank his blood before it could touch the earth, ending the multiplication. She is the one who removes what cannot be removed any other way.
Her complexion is dark as night, her hair is loose, she has three round eyes and a necklace that flashes like lightning, and fire comes with her breath. She rides a donkey. In her four hands she holds a cleaver and an iron hook, and shows the gestures of fearlessness and blessing. For all her terror, she is called Shubhankari because she only ever brings good to her devotees: what she destroys is fear itself.

Kalaratri and Saturn: A Saturday Saptami With Retrograde Shani
Saturn in Jyotish is time, discipline, karma, delay, labour, loss, old age and endurance. When it is difficult it brings obstruction, depression, chronic illness, legal trouble and the sense of being stuck. When it is respected, it brings lasting achievement built slowly. Kalaratri, whose name contains Kala - time itself - is the goddess assigned to it.
In 2026 Day 7 falls on a Saturday, Saturn's own weekday, and Saturn is retrograde in Pisces in Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra. A retrograde Saturn returns to unfinished work and old debts; Sade Sati is running for Aquarius (final phase), Pisces (peak phase) and Aries (first phase) Moon signs, and Dhaiya (Kantak and Ashtama Shani) for Sagittarius and Leo Moon signs, where Saturn transits the 4th and 8th house from the Moon. For all five groups, the Saturday of Kalaratri is the most effective Navratri day for Shani shanti.

Maa Kalaratri Puja Vidhi at Home: Step by Step
Kalaratri is especially worshipped at night. Many households perform the main puja after sunset on Saptami, and tantric traditions treat this as one of the year's most powerful nights for sadhana.
- Morningbathe, wear grey, water the barley and check the Akhand Jyot
- Invokeplace Maa Kalaratri's picture beside the Kalash and recite her dhyana
- Offernight-blooming jasmine or blue flowers, kumkum, akshat, a dark chunari, incense, a sesame-oil lamp

Kalaratri Night Puja Time on Saptami, October 17, by City
Kalaratri is the goddess of the night, and for a night puja the tithi that counts is the one running after sunset, not the one at sunrise. In 2026 that gives one answer worldwide: the Saptami night is the evening of Saturday, October 17. Saptami tithi is in force at sunset on October 17 in every city below, and it has ended before sunset on October 18 everywhere.
Two groups are easily caught out. In India, Sunday, October 18 is still Saptami by sunrise, but Saptami ends at 8:29 AM IST that morning, so the evening of the 18th already belongs to Ashtami - keep the Kalaratri night puja for Saturday. In Australia and New Zealand, Saptami is October 18 by sunrise, yet it ends in the early afternoon of the 18th, so the only Saptami night there is also Saturday the 17th.
On the US West Coast the window is short: Saptami ends at 7:59 PM PDT, about an hour and a half after sunset. Light the lamp and begin the 108 repetitions of the mantra as soon as the sun sets.

What the Kalaratri Mantras Mean
A mantra recited with its meaning in mind carries more weight than one recited by rote. These are close translations of the mool mantra, the stuti and the first half of the dhyana shloka above. The dhyana is a meditation image: each phrase gives one detail of her form for the mind to hold while chanting.
- Om Devi Kalaratryai NamahOm, salutations to the Goddess Kalaratri
- Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Kalaratri Rupena Samsthitato the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Kalaratri - salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her again and again

Navratri 7th Day Colour 2026: Grey
Day 7 is a Saturday, and the colour is grey - the colour of Saturn, ash and the even, unshowy strength that endures. The colour calendar follows the civil date, so purple is worn on Sunday, October 18, even though in India that day is still Saptami by tithi.
The full 2026 sequence for India: Day 1 Shailaputri (Oct 11), Day 2 Brahmacharini (Oct 12), Day 3 Chandraghanta (Oct 13), Day 4 Kushmanda (Oct 14), Day 5 Skandamata (Oct 15), Day 6 Katyayani (Oct 16), Day 7 Kalaratri (Saptami, Oct 17 and 18), Day 8 Mahagauri (Durga Ashtami, Oct 19), Day 9 Siddhidatri (Maha Navami, Oct 19, with Navami tithi running to 12:51 PM IST on Oct 20), and Vijayadashami on Tuesday, October 20.
Navratri Day 7 Do's and Don'ts
The general vrat rules you took on at Ghatasthapana still apply. These are the points specific to Kalaratri's day, and to a Saptami that falls on Saturn's own weekday.
- Dowear grey on Saturday, October 17, and keep the Akhand Jyot steady
- Dooffer jaggery, or a vrat-friendly sweet made with jaggery instead of sugar, and share it as prasad
- Dohold the main Kalaratri puja after sunset on Saturday, within your city's Saptami window
- Doif Saturn is difficult in your chart, light a mustard-oil lamp at dusk and donate black sesame, urad dal or a blanket on this Saturday
- Don'tmove the night puja to Sunday evening in India - Saptami ends at 8:29 AM IST on October 18 and the evening belongs to Ashtami
- Don'tfear the form - her ferocity is turned against fear itself, which is why she is called Shubhankari
- Don'tmistreat workers, the elderly or anyone who serves you on Saturn's day; fair treatment is the Shani remedy that costs nothing
- Don'tbreak the fast rules set at your Day 1 sankalpa - no grains, onion, garlic, meat or alcohol if you are keeping the full vrat
The takeaway
Navratri Day 7 2026 is Saturday, October 17: Maa Kalaratri, grey, and jaggery. In India Saptami continues into Sunday, October 18 and Durga Ashtami is Monday, October 19; in North America and Britain Ashtami comes a day earlier, on October 18. With the goddess of Saturn worshipped on Saturn's own day and Saturn retrograde, this is the Navratri day for anyone under Sade Sati or Dhaiya.
