In short

Navratri Day 3 is Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the day of Maa Chandraghanta. Wear red, offer milk kheer as bhog and chant 'Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah' 108 times. Tritiya runs from 10:14 PM IST on October 12 to 11:28 PM IST on October 13, but it ends at 1:58 PM in New York and 10:58 AM in California, so families in North America should do the puja in the morning. She rules Venus, which is retrograde in Libra all through Navratri, and that makes Day 3 the festival's relationship remedy.

Navratri Day 3 is Tuesday, October 13, 2026, dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta, the warrior-bride form of Parvati who wears a half-moon shaped like a bell on her forehead. Wear red, offer milk kheer as bhog, ring a bell through the aarti and chant 'Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah' 108 times. Tritiya tithi runs from 10:14 PM IST on October 12 to 11:28 PM IST on October 13. In North America it ends early, at 1:58 PM Eastern and 10:58 AM Pacific, so families there should do the puja in the morning. In Vedic astrology Chandraghanta governs Venus, which rules marriage, love, beauty, comfort and the arts. Venus turned retrograde on October 3 and stays retrograde in its own sign Libra for the whole of Navratri. Retrograde Venus brings old relationships, unfinished attachments and second thoughts back into view, which makes this year's Day 3 the strongest relationship remedy of the nine. Day 3 falls on October 13 almost everywhere. In New Zealand Tritiya is present at two sunrises, so it can be observed on October 13 and 14.

Tritiya is the third lunar day of the bright fortnight. In some North Indian calendars the day is also kept as Sindoor Tritiya, when married women offer sindoor to the Goddess and apply it themselves for the long life of their husbands.

Who Is Maa Chandraghanta? Her Story and the Meaning of Her Name

Chandraghanta takes her name from the crescent moon (chandra) shaped like a temple bell (ghanta) on her forehead. In the story most often told, she is the form Parvati took on her wedding day. When Shiva arrived at Himavan's palace with his procession of ghosts, ascetics and wild beings, her family was terrified; Parvati assumed this fierce, radiant form to protect them and to meet Shiva as an equal.

She is golden in complexion, rides a tiger, and has ten arms holding a trident, mace, sword, kamandalu, lotus, bow, arrow and japa mala, with the remaining two hands in the gestures of blessing and fearlessness. The sound of her bell is said to drive away negative forces and disturbing spirits. She is therefore both bride and warrior - grace that does not need to be fragile, beauty that can protect itself.

Chandraghanta and Venus: Retrograde Venus in Libra During Navratri 2026

Venus is the karaka of marriage, romantic love, luxury, beauty, vehicles, the arts and pleasure. A strong Venus brings grace and ease in relationships. A weak or afflicted Venus shows as repeated disappointment in love, delayed marriage, overindulgence or a life that has comfort but no joy in it.

Venus turned retrograde on October 3, 2026, and for all of Navratri it sits in Libra, its own sign, moving back through Swati nakshatra. A retrograde planet in its own sign is strong but turned inward: it reviews rather than initiates. This is the classic period when former partners reappear, old attachments resurface, and people reconsider commitments they thought were settled. It is a poor time to begin something new in love purely on impulse and an excellent time to understand what you actually want from it.

Chandraghanta's worship is especially recommended for Taurus and Libra Moon signs and ascendants, for those running a Venus Mahadasha or Antardasha, for anyone whose marriage is delayed, and for couples going through a difficult phase. Married women traditionally worship her for marital harmony.

Maa Chandraghanta Puja Vidhi at Home: Step by Step

  • Morningbathe, wear red, water the barley and check the Akhand Jyot

Chandraghanta Puja Samagri and Bhog: What to Offer on Day 3

Most of what Day 3 needs is already on the altar from Ghatasthapana. The items specific to Chandraghanta are the bell, red offerings for Sindoor Tritiya and a milk-based bhog.

If you are keeping the Navratri fast, ordinary grains are avoided, so make the kheer with samak (barnyard millet, sold as vrat rice) or with makhana instead of rice. Use milk and sugar or jaggery as usual. The offering stays a milk kheer and stays within the vrat.

  • Bella small brass hand bell, rung through the aarti and after the japa
  • Flowersjasmine, her traditional favourite, along with red roses or red hibiscus for the day's colour
  • Red offeringsred chunari, sindoor and kumkum for Sindoor Tritiya

What the Chandraghanta Mantras Mean

Chanting with the meaning in mind is the difference between recitation and japa. These are plain-English renderings of the three verses above, not literal word-for-word translations.

  • Om Devi Chandraghantayai NamahOm, salutations to the Goddess Chandraghanta.
  • Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Chandraghanta Rupena SamsthitaTo the Goddess who dwells in every living being in the form of Chandraghanta, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations again and again.
  • Pindaja Pravararudha ChandakopastrakairyutaShe who rides the finest of mounts, the tiger, and is armed with weapons of fierce wrath.
  • Prasadam Tanute Mahyam Chandraghanteti VishrutaMay she who is renowned as Chandraghanta extend her grace to me.
  • Why the bell follows the japaher name is the bell-shaped moon, and the sound of her bell is said to drive away fear and negative forces, so the chant ends in sound rather than silence

Day 3 is a Tuesday, Mars's day, so the colour is red - courage, passion and the auspicious red of a bride's attire, fitting for a goddess worshipped as both warrior and bride.

The full 2026 sequence for India: Day 1 Shailaputri (Oct 11), Day 2 Brahmacharini (Oct 12), Day 3 Chandraghanta (Oct 13), Day 4 Kushmanda (Oct 14), Day 5 Skandamata (Oct 15), Day 6 Katyayani (Oct 16), Day 7 Kalaratri (Saptami, Oct 17 and 18), Day 8 Mahagauri (Durga Ashtami, Oct 19), Day 9 Siddhidatri (Maha Navami, Oct 19, with Navami tithi running to 12:51 PM IST on Oct 20), and Vijayadashami on Tuesday, October 20.

Most of the world keeps Day 3 on October 13. The exception is New Zealand: Tritiya begins at 5:44 AM NZDT on October 13 and is still running at sunrise on the 14th, so in Auckland the tithi touches two sunrises and Chandraghanta can be worshipped on both days. Day 4 in New Zealand then moves to October 15.

Best Time for Chandraghanta Puja in the USA, Canada, UK and Australia

The festival day follows the tithi at local sunrise, so Day 3 is Tuesday, October 13 across North America. The puja timing still matters, because Tritiya ends early in the day there. On the US East Coast and in Toronto it ends at 1:58 PM, in Chicago and Houston at 12:58 PM, and in California and Vancouver at 10:58 AM. Anything done on Tuesday evening in North America falls in Chaturthi, which is Maa Kushmanda's tithi.

The practical rule for North American families is to do the main Chandraghanta puja, the 108 japa and the bell aarti in the morning, between sunrise and the end of Tritiya. If work makes that impossible, do at least the mantra and the lamp before the cutoff and keep the evening aarti as a family gathering.

In the UK Tritiya lasts until 6:58 PM, so the whole working day and the early evening are available. In India it runs until 11:28 PM and in Dubai until 9:58 PM. In Singapore, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne it covers all of Tuesday's daylight. In Auckland Tritiya is present at sunrise on both October 13 and 14, but on the 14th it lasts only twenty minutes after sunrise, from 6:38 AM to 6:58 AM. That makes October 13 the main day for New Zealand.

  • USA East Coast and Torontopuja between sunrise and 1:58 PM on October 13
  • Chicago and Houstonpuja before 12:58 PM on October 13
  • California and Vancouverpuja before 10:58 AM on October 13
  • UKany time before 6:58 PM on October 13
  • Singapore, Perth, Sydney and Melbourneany time in Tuesday's daylight on October 13
  • New ZealandOctober 13 is the main day; October 14 has Tritiya only until 6:58 AM

The takeaway

Navratri Day 3 2026 falls on Tuesday, October 13: Maa Chandraghanta, red, and kheer. With Venus retrograde in Libra across the whole festival, her worship this year is less about asking for new romance than about clearing the ground - repairing what can be repaired and seeing clearly what cannot. Which planet does Maa Chandraghanta represent?
Maa Chandraghanta governs Venus (Shukra) in Vedic astrology, the planet of marriage, love and beauty. In 2026 Venus is retrograde in Libra, in Swati nakshatra, for the whole of Navratri. That makes her worship especially relevant for relationship issues and delayed marriage.
What is Sindoor Tritiya?
Sindoor Tritiya is observed on the third day of Navratri, October 13, 2026, when married women offer sindoor to the Goddess and then apply it themselves, praying for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands.
When does Tritiya tithi start and end for Navratri Day 3 2026?
In India, Tritiya runs from 10:14 PM IST on Monday, October 12 to 11:28 PM IST on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. In New York it runs from 12:44 PM on October 12 to 1:58 PM on October 13, in California from 9:44 AM on October 12 to 10:58 AM on October 13, and in London from 5:44 PM on October 12 to 6:58 PM on October 13. What time should I do the Navratri Day 3 puja in the USA?
Do it on the morning of Tuesday, October 13, 2026, before Tritiya ends: 1:58 PM on the East Coast, 12:58 PM in Chicago and Houston, and 10:58 AM in California. What is the meaning of the Maa Chandraghanta mantra?
'Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah' means 'Om, salutations to the Goddess Chandraghanta.' Her prarthana, 'Pindaja Pravararudha Chandakopastrakairyuta, Prasadam Tanute Mahyam Chandraghanteti Vishruta', asks the goddess who rides the tiger and is armed with fierce weapons, renowned as Chandraghanta, to extend her grace. Chant the mool mantra 108 times and ring a bell when you finish.
Which flower is offered to Maa Chandraghanta?
Jasmine is traditionally her favourite flower. Red roses and red hibiscus are also offered on Day 3, because red is the day's colour in 2026 and the colour of a bride, and Chandraghanta is Parvati on her wedding day.
Why is a bell rung in Chandraghanta puja?
Her name means the one with a bell-shaped moon (chandra and ghanta) on her forehead, and the sound of her bell is said to drive away fear and negative forces. On Day 3 the bell is rung through the whole aarti and after the 108 japa, so the sound itself becomes part of the offering.
Can I offer kheer for Chandraghanta if I am fasting?
Yes. Make it with samak (vrat rice) or makhana instead of ordinary rice, because grains are avoided during the Navratri fast. Milk and sugar or jaggery keep it a traditional milk-kheer bhog that you can eat as prasad without breaking the vrat.
Why do some websites show a different colour for Navratri Day 3?
The popular nine-colour sequence starts from the colour of the weekday on which Navratri opens, so it shifts every year. Navratri 2026 opens on a Sunday, so Day 3 falls on Tuesday, Mars's day, and its colour is red. Lists showing another colour for Day 3 were made for a different year.
What are the benefits of worshipping Maa Chandraghanta?
She is worshipped for fearlessness, protection from unseen disturbances and peace in the home. Married women pray to her for marital harmony on Sindoor Tritiya. Because she governs Venus, her worship is also a traditional remedy for delayed marriage and relationship strain, and it is especially relevant in 2026 with Venus retrograde through Navratri.
