In short
Dussehra 2026 (Vijayadashami) is Tuesday, October 20 in India, the USA, Canada, the UK and the Gulf, and Wednesday, October 21 in Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand. The Vijay Muhurat in New Delhi is 1:59 PM to 2:44 PM IST, the Aparahna puja window 1:13 PM to 3:30 PM, and Ravan Dahan follows sunset at 5:46 PM. Below are local Vijay Muhurat and Ravan Dahan times for 23 cities, the Shami, Aparajita and Shastra puja with their mantras, and which Moon signs should not begin anything major on the day.
Dussehra 2026, Vijayadashami, falls on Tuesday, October 20 in India, the USA, Canada, the UK and the Gulf. Dashami tithi begins at 12:51 PM IST that day and the Vijay Muhurat in New Delhi runs from 1:59 PM to 2:44 PM IST, inside the Aparahna puja window of 1:13 PM to 3:30 PM. The Moon is in Shravana nakshatra until 6:01 PM IST, and Dashami joined with Shravana in the afternoon is the combination the texts single out as the most auspicious form of Vijayadashami. In Australia and New Zealand, Dashami begins only on the evening of October 20, so Dussehra there is Wednesday, October 21. Vijayadashami is one of the three and a half self-auspicious days of the Hindu year - you need no muhurat to worship, buy or begin - but the Moon's position still matters for the individual: in 2026 it is Chandrashtama, an unfavourable Moon, for Gemini Moon signs in most of the world. This guide gives Vijay Muhurat, Aparahna and Ravan Dahan times for 23 cities, the Shami, Aparajita and Shastra puja, and a Moon-sign check before you sign or buy anything on the day.
Dussehra 2026 Date, Time and Muhurat at a Glance
Vijayadashami is the tenth day after the nine nights of Navratri. It marks Rama's victory over Ravana and Durga's victory over Mahishasura, and it closes the festival: the Navratri fast is broken, the Kalash is moved, the sprouted barley is distributed, and Durga idols are immersed.

Dussehra 2026 Date in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia: October 20 or 21?
Vijayadashami is kept on the day Dashami tithi prevails in the Aparahna - the fourth of the five parts of the daytime, roughly early to mid afternoon. Within it sits the Vijay Muhurat, the eleventh of the fifteen muhurtas of the day, held to grant success to anything begun in it. Where Dashami covers the Aparahna on two consecutive days, the first is taken; and when Shravana nakshatra also falls in the Aparahna, that day is preferred over all others.
In India, Dashami begins at 12:51 PM IST on October 20 and covers the whole Aparahna that afternoon, with Shravana nakshatra running until 6:01 PM. Both conditions point to October 20. In Kolkata, Dashami also runs into the afternoon of October 21, until 2:12 PM, but the first-day rule and Shravana keep the pan-Indian Dussehra on the 20th, while Bengal's own panjika places Bijoya Dashami and the immersion of the Goddess on the 21st.
In the Americas and Britain Dashami is already running by the morning of the 20th, so the date is the same. In Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland it begins only in the evening of the 20th, after the afternoon has passed, so the first afternoon with Dashami is October 21. Singapore and Perth sit on the boundary: Dashami begins at 3:21 PM local time on October 20, touching only the end of that afternoon, while the full Vijay Muhurat falls on October 21. Temples there may choose either day - check with yours.
| Region | Dussehra 2026 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| India, UAE and the Gulf | Tuesday, October 20 | Dashami covers the whole afternoon, with Shravana nakshatra in the Aparahna |
| Bengal - Bijoya Dashami and Visarjan | Wednesday, October 21 | Bengal's panjika places the immersion of the Goddess on the 21st |
| USA and Canada | Tuesday, October 20 | Dashami is already running from the early hours (3:21 AM EDT, 12:21 AM PDT) |
| UK and Europe | Tuesday, October 20 | Dashami begins at 8:21 AM BST, before the afternoon |
| Singapore and Perth | Borderline: October 20 by the first-day rule, October 21 for the full Vijay Muhurat | Dashami begins at 3:21 PM local time on October 20, touching only the end of that afternoon |
| Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand | Wednesday, October 21 | Dashami begins only in the evening of October 20 (6:21 PM AEDT, 8:21 PM NZDT) |

Ravan Dahan Time 2026 by City
The burning of the effigies of Ravana, Meghanada and Kumbhakarna is held after sunset on Vijayadashami, at the end of the Ramlila. It is a community observance tied to the day rather than a fixed muhurat, so the practical time is your local sunset onwards. Abroad, many community Dussehra events are scheduled on the nearest weekend; the puja, the Shami worship and anything you want to begin under the Vijay Muhurat still belong on the day itself.

Dussehra on a Weekday Abroad: How to Observe It in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia
Dussehra 2026 falls on a working Tuesday in North America, Britain and the Gulf, and on a Wednesday in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. Most temples and community associations abroad move the Ramlila and the Ravan Dahan to the nearest weekend. That is a sensible compromise for the public celebration, but the parts of Vijayadashami that are tied to the tithi - the Aparajita and Shami puja, the Shastra puja, and anything you want to begin under the Vijay Muhurat - belong on the day itself.
The Aparahna falls in the afternoon everywhere, so a short household puja fits a lunch break or the end of the working day. Do not take India's Vijay Muhurat and convert it to your own clock: in North America that lands before dawn, and in eastern Australia it lands on the evening of October 20, a day before Dussehra there. Use the window computed for your own city above.
- On the dayclose the Navratri Kalash in the morning, then do the Aparajita and Shami puja inside your city's Aparahna window - Tuesday, October 20 in the Americas, the UK and the Gulf; Wednesday, October 21 in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland
- No Shami tree nearbyworship a potted Shami plant or a few Shami leaves; Apta leaves, exchanged as 'sona' in Maharashtra, are the traditional alternative
- Shastra puja at work or homeplace the tools of your livelihood - laptop, books, instruments, car keys - before the Goddess with kumkum and flowers, even if the puja is brief
- A first step in the Vijay Muhuratsign, book, pay a deposit or begin a lesson inside the window, even if the larger celebration waits for the weekend
- Weekendjoin the community Ramlila and Ravan Dahan; the burning of the effigy is a community observance after sunset, not a fixed muhurat
Is Dussehra 2026 Auspicious for Your Moon Sign? Chandra Bala and Chandrashtama
Vijayadashami is one of the Sade Teen Muhurat - the three and a half days of the year so auspicious that they need no further muhurat. The others are Gudi Padwa (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), Akshaya Tritiya, and the half day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada after Diwali. On these days the festival itself, its puja and ordinary good works need no checking at all.
For a major personal beginning - signing for property, buying a vehicle, launching a business, starting a job - Jyotish still looks at the individual through Chandra Bala, the strength of the transiting Moon counted from your own natal Moon sign. The Moon is in Capricorn throughout the daytime of Dussehra, including the Vijay Muhurat, in India, the Americas, Britain and the Gulf. Counted from your Rashi, the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th places are favourable. The 8th, called Chandrashtama, is the one to respect: it is traditionally avoided for new ventures even on an otherwise excellent day.
Australia and New Zealand keep Dussehra on October 21, when the Moon has moved into Aquarius by the Vijay Muhurat (from 12:30 PM in Sydney, 9:30 AM in Perth and 2:30 PM in Auckland), so the list there is different. These are Vedic Moon signs, which usually differ from the Western sun sign - use the free calculator below if you are unsure of yours.
Away from the personal chart, the sky of Dussehra 2026 carries a fitting image. The Sun, the planet of authority and ego, entered Libra - its sign of debilitation - on October 17, and sits there on the festival of the fall of the proudest king. Vijayadashami is a day for victories won through right action rather than force.

Dussehra 2026 Muhurat for Buying a Car, Property or Gold
Because the day is self-auspicious, it is the traditional date for beginnings across India. If your Moon sign is favourable, any of the following can be started on Dussehra without consulting a separate muhurat; if it is Chandrashtama for you, keep the puja and move the commitment to another good day.
- Businessopening a shop or office, launching a product, signing a partnership
- Property and vehiclesbooking, buying or taking possession - many families take delivery of a new car on Dussehra
- Gold and new toolsbuying gold, instruments or equipment, often worshipped in the Shastra puja the same day
- LearningVidyarambham, a child's first writing of letters, is performed on Vijayadashami in Kerala and Karnataka; adults begin music, dance or a new course
- JourneysSeema Avalanghan, crossing the village or city boundary, was the traditional start of military campaigns and is still observed as a symbolic first step
Dussehra Puja Vidhi 2026: Aparajita, Shami and Shastra (Ayudha) Puja
The core worship of Vijayadashami is done in the afternoon, in the Aparahna, after the Navratri fast has been broken. The sequence below is the standard household form.
- Close Navratriafter the morning puja, move the Kalash slightly, sprinkle its water through the home and give out the sprouted barley as prasad
- Aparajita Pujadraw an eight-petalled lotus with kumkum or rice flour in the north-east, invoke Goddess Aparajita, the unconquerable, with flowers, akshat and a lamp, and pray for victory in the year ahead
- Shami Pujaworship the Shami tree, where the Pandavas hid their weapons during their year in disguise; offer water, kumkum and a lamp and recite the Shami mantra
- Shami mantraShami Shamayate Papam Shami Shatru Vinashini, Arjunasya Dhanurdhari Ramasya Priyadarshini
- Shastra Pujaclean and worship weapons, tools, vehicles, books and the instruments of your work - in many households this is done on Navami as Ayudha Puja
- Apta leaves (Maharashtra)exchange Apta or Shami leaves as 'sona', gold, with family and neighbours
- Neelkanthsighting the Indian roller bird on Dussehra is considered a sign of good fortune
- Eveningattend the Ramlila and Ravan Dahan, and touch the feet of elders on returning home
Dussehra Puja Samagri and Mantras with Meaning
Keep everything ready before the Aparahna begins, so the whole puja falls inside the window - 1:13 PM to 3:30 PM IST in New Delhi on October 20, or your own city's window in the table above.
- For Aparajita Pujakumkum or rice flour for the eight-petalled lotus, akshat (unbroken rice), flowers - blue Aparajita (butterfly pea) flowers where available - a ghee lamp, incense and a sweet for naivedya
- For Shami Pujawater, kumkum, akshat, a lamp, and a Shami tree, a potted plant or a few leaves
- For Shastra Pujathe tools, books, instruments and vehicle keys to be worshipped, cleaned the day before, with kumkum, flowers and a sacred thread

- Aparajita stuti (Devi Mahatmya, Chapter 5)Namo Devyai Mahadevyai Shivayai Satatam Namah, Namah Prakrityai Bhadrayai Niyatah Pranatah Sma Tam - salutations always to the Goddess, the great Goddess, the auspicious one; to Prakriti, the gracious one, we bow in devotion
Why Is Dussehra Celebrated? The Story of Vijayadashami and How the World Celebrates
Two victories are remembered on this day. In the Ramayana, Rama defeats and kills Ravana after a long war in Lanka, having worshipped the Goddess for strength - the episode that ties Ramlila to Navratri across North India. In the Devi Mahatmya, Durga slays the buffalo demon Mahishasura after nine nights of battle, and the tenth day is her victory. A third story belongs to the Mahabharata: the Pandavas, ending their year in disguise, recovered their weapons from the Shami tree, which is why the tree is worshipped today.
The celebrations vary across India and the diaspora. In Mysuru, the Dasara procession carries the Goddess Chamundeshwari through the city on a caparisoned elephant. In Kullu, the Dussehra fair begins on Vijayadashami and runs for a week. In Bengal and across the Bengali diaspora, Bijoya Dashami brings the immersion of Durga and Sindoor Khela, married women smearing each other with vermilion. In North India the day ends with Ravana's effigy in flames.
The takeaway
Dussehra 2026 is Tuesday, October 20 in India, the USA, Canada, the UK and the Gulf, with the Vijay Muhurat from 1:59 PM to 2:44 PM IST in Delhi and Shravana nakshatra in the afternoon - the classically preferred form of Vijayadashami. Australia and New Zealand celebrate on Wednesday, October 21. The festival is self-auspicious, but a major personal beginning still meets your own chart: this year it is Chandrashtama for Gemini Moon signs, and for Cancer Moon signs in Australia and New Zealand. If you plan to buy, sign or launch on Dussehra, book a 1-on-1 video consultation with Astrologer Sheela Goklani to check the day and the hour against your birth chart and Dasha.
