Which houses give Mangal Dosha
Mars in the 1st (self and temper), 2nd (family and speech), 4th (home and peace), 7th (spouse), 8th (longevity and in-laws) or 12th (bed pleasures and expenses) house is the classical definition. Its aspect matters too: Mars casts special 4th and 8th aspects, so from these houses it looks at the 7th house of marriage or its supporting houses.
Manglik with Manglik: the main remedy
The most widely accepted way to neutralise Mangal Dosha is to match with a partner whose chart has it too, so the Mars energy is balanced on both sides. When only one partner is Manglik, astrologers look at the strength of the dosha, the exceptions and the rest of both charts before advising. A balanced view
Roughly half of all charts have Mars in one of these six houses from at least one reference, so Mangal Dosha is common - not a verdict on a marriage. It describes a strong Mars that needs a constructive outlet. Read it alongside the 7th house, Venus, the Navamsa and the Dasha you are running.

- What is Mangal Dosha?
- Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha, Chevvai Dosham) is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. Mars is a fiery, separative planet, and in these houses tradition says it can strain married life - which is why families check it before matching.
- Is Mangal Dosha counted from the Lagna or the Moon?
- Both. The Lagna is the primary reference, the Moon sign is checked as well, and many astrologers also look from Venus, the planet of marriage. This calculator shows all three and, like Drik Panchang, calls a chart non-Manglik only when all three are clear. A dosha from both the Lagna and the Moon is stronger than one from a single reference, and one from Venus alone is the mildest.
- Does Mangal Dosha end at age 28?
- This is a popular belief, often linked to Mars maturing at 28, but the classical texts do not say the dosha disappears. What changes with age is maturity and circumstance; the placement in the chart stays the same. Many astrologers do consider the dosha milder after 28.
- What cancels Mangal Dosha?
- The widely quoted exceptions include Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter with or aspecting Mars, Mars with the Moon, and specific sign-and-house combinations such as Mars in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn. The strongest and most accepted remedy is marriage to a partner who also has Mangal Dosha.
- Why does the 2nd house sometimes not count?
- North Indian practice often lists only the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses, while South Indian practice adds the 2nd. This calculator includes the 2nd, so if Mars is there you will see it flagged; ask your astrologer which reckoning your family follows.
- Can I check Mangal Dosha without a birth time?
- Partly. Without a time the Lagna is unknown, so only the checks from the Moon and Venus can be made. Those are still useful, but the Lagna check is the main one, so add a time if you can find it.
