In short
Durga Ashtami 2026 - Navratri Day 8, the day of Maa Mahagauri - is Monday, October 19 in India, the Gulf, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, and Sunday, October 18 in the USA, Canada and the UK. In India, Kanya Pujan runs from sunrise until Ashtami ends at 10:52 AM IST, and Sandhi Puja is 10:28 AM to 11:16 AM IST, the same instant worldwide. The bhog is coconut, the mantra is 'Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah', and the day's colour, purple, is worn on October 18. Below: Kanya Pujan and Sandhi Puja times for 20 cities.
Durga Ashtami 2026, the eighth day of Navratri and the day of Maa Mahagauri, falls on Monday, October 19 in India - not on Sunday, October 18, as a simple day count suggests. Saptami is present at two sunrises in India this year, which pushes Ashtami to the 19th. In the USA, Canada and the UK there is no such doubling, so Ashtami there is Sunday, October 18. Wear purple on October 18 per the colour calendar, offer coconut as bhog, chant 'Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah', and perform Kanya Pujan on the morning of Ashtami - before 10:52 AM IST in India. The most time-sensitive ritual of the whole festival, Sandhi Puja, runs from 10:28 AM to 11:16 AM IST on October 19, which is 12:58 AM in New York, 9:58 PM the previous evening in California and 3:58 PM in Sydney. In Jyotish, Mahagauri governs Rahu - and this is the final Ashtami before Rahu leaves Aquarius on December 5.
Is Durga Ashtami 2026 on October 18 or 19? Date by Country
Ashtami tithi runs from 8:29 AM IST on Sunday, October 18 to 10:52 AM IST on Monday, October 19. Durga Ashtami is kept on the day Ashtami is present at local sunrise, and Ashtami that is mixed with Saptami at sunrise is classically avoided. In India the 18th begins in Saptami, so Ashtami is the 19th. In the Americas and Britain, Ashtami has already begun before sunrise on the 18th.

Sandhi Puja Time on Durga Ashtami 2026: India, USA, UK, Australia
Sandhi Puja is performed in the forty-eight minutes that straddle the end of Ashtami and the start of Navami - the last twenty-four minutes of one and the first twenty-four of the other. It commemorates the moment Chamunda emerged to slay the demons Chanda and Munda, and it is offered 108 lamps and 108 lotuses. Because it is tied to an instant rather than to sunrise, it happens at the same moment worldwide - which puts it in the middle of the night across North America.
These times follow the Bisuddha Siddhanta panjika and modern astronomical calculation, by which Ashtami ends at 10:52 AM IST. Many Kolkata pandals instead follow the Gupta Press panjika, by which Ashtami ends at 7:49 AM IST and Sandhi Puja runs from about 7:26 AM to 8:14 AM IST - 9:56 PM to 10:44 PM EDT on October 18 in New York, 2:56 AM to 3:44 AM BST in London and 12:56 PM to 1:44 PM AEDT in Sydney. If your community puja announces a niyomaboli, follow it.

Who Is Maa Mahagauri?
Mahagauri means the extremely fair, or the radiantly white. During her long austerities to win Shiva, Parvati's body became dark with dust, sun and exposure. When Shiva finally accepted her, he bathed her in the waters of the Ganga, and she emerged luminous, white as a conch, the moon and the kunda flower. She is purity restored after hardship - the reward at the end of tapas.
She is described as eight years old in some texts, wears white, and rides a white bull. Her four hands hold a trident and a damaru, and show the gestures of fearlessness and blessing. She is the form of the Goddess who washes away accumulated sin and grants peace, which is why the eighth day is so strongly associated with purification and with the honouring of young girls.
Shwete Vrishe Samarudha Shwetambaradhara Shuchih, Mahagauri Shubham Dadyanmahadeva Pramodada.
Mahagauri and Rahu: The Last Ashtami of the Aquarius Rahu Cycle
In Jyotish, Mahagauri is the form assigned to Rahu, the north lunar node - the graha of obsession, illusion, foreign lands, technology, sudden rise and sudden exposure. It is a striking pairing: the most luminous of the nine forms governs the darkest of the grahas. The logic is that Rahu's confusion is cleared not by fighting it but by washing it clean, the way Shiva's Ganga water restored Parvati's radiance.
Rahu has been in Aquarius since May 2025 and moves into Capricorn on December 5, 2026. This Ashtami is therefore the last Durga Ashtami of the current Rahu cycle. If the last eighteen months have brought confusion you could not name, an attachment that would not let go, or ambition that outran your footing, Ashtami 2026 is the most appropriate day to close that chapter.

Kanya Pujan 2026 Date and Muhurat by City, and How to Do It
Kanya Pujan honours nine young girls, usually between two and ten years old, as living forms of the nine Durgas, along with one boy representing Bhairava or Langur Veer. It is done on the morning of Ashtami while the tithi is running. In India that means before 10:52 AM IST on October 19; families who keep Navami instead may do it on October 19 after 10:52 AM or on the morning of October 20.
In the USA and Canada, where Ashtami is October 18, the whole day of Sunday the 18th is available in the Ashtami tithi - an easy year for a weekend Kanya Pujan. In the UK, Ashtami runs from 3:59 AM on October 18, so the whole of that Sunday also qualifies.

Kanya Pujan Samagri and the Nine Kanyas by Age
The Devi Bhagavata Purana, describing Kumari Puja during Navratri, names a form of the Goddess for each age from two to ten, and treats girls in that range as the proper recipients of worship. A child under two is not invited, and traditionally neither is a girl past ten. Nine girls is the ideal; where that is not possible, families invite as many as they can, and the honouring matters more than the count.
Prepare everything before the girls arrive, so the puja is not interrupted. The meal is cooked fresh that morning without onion or garlic.
- Ages 2 to 4Kumarika (2), Trimurti (3), Kalyani (4)
- Ages 5 to 7Rohini (5), Kalika (6), Chandika (7)

Durga Ashtami 2026 Abroad: USA, UK, Gulf and Australia
For Indians abroad, the date of Ashtami and the hours you have to keep it both move with your own sunrise. Following Indian dates puts you on the wrong day in North America and Britain, and following IST times in the Gulf can make you finish after the tithi has already ended.
North America has an easy year: Ashtami is Sunday, October 18, so Kanya Pujan can be done at home on a weekend morning, from 7:10 AM in New York or 7:06 AM in Chicago, with the whole day inside the tithi. Sandhi Puja falls on Sunday night - 12:58 AM EDT on the East Coast and 9:58 PM PDT in California - and families who cannot reach a temple at that hour can light the 108 lamps at home.
The Gulf has the tightest window anywhere. Ashtami is Monday, October 19, but it ends at 9:22 AM in Dubai and 8:22 AM in Riyadh, so Kanya Pujan has to begin soon after sunrise, and Sandhi Puja in Dubai is 8:58 AM to 9:46 AM. In Australia, Ashtami is a Monday working day, but the tithi runs until 4:22 PM AEDT in Sydney and Melbourne and 1:22 PM in Perth, leaving room for a morning puja before work. In the UK, Ashtami is Sunday, October 18, and Sandhi Puja falls at 5:58 AM BST on Monday, before the working day.

Navratri Day 8 Colour 2026: Purple, and Why White Is Also Worn
The colour for Navratri Day 8 in 2026 is purple. The colour sequence is set by the weekday on which Navratri opens, and because it opened on a Sunday this year, purple falls on Sunday, October 18. In the USA, Canada and the UK that is Durga Ashtami itself, so devotees abroad wear purple and worship Mahagauri on the same day.
In India the doubled Saptami separates the two. Purple is worn on October 18, while Mahagauri's Ashtami falls on Monday, October 19, which carries peacock green on the colour calendar. Many families settle this by wearing white on Ashtami - Mahagauri's own colour, white as the conch, the moon and the kunda flower.
Ashtami Fast 2026: Rules, What to Eat and When to Break It
Ashtami is the one day many people fast even when they do not keep all nine. The rule is satvik food: no grains or lentils, no onion or garlic, and rock salt in place of ordinary salt. A nirjala fast, without water, is the strictest form, but most householders keep a phalahari fast of fruit and milk, which the tradition treats as fully valid.
When to break it depends on what you vowed on Day 1. An Ashtami-only fast is broken after Kanya Pujan with the halwa, puri and chana prasad. A nine-day fast continues to Navami and is broken after Navami tithi ends, which in India is 12:51 PM IST on Tuesday, October 20.
- Eatfruit, milk, curd, paneer, makhana, nuts, potatoes and sweet potatoes
- Fasting flourskuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), rajgira (amaranth), sabudana and samak (barnyard millet) rice
- Saltsendha namak (rock salt) only
- Avoidwheat, rice, lentils, onion, garlic, ordinary salt, meat, eggs and alcohol
- Ashtami-only fastbreak after Kanya Pujan, with the prasad
- Nine-day fast in Indiabreak after 12:51 PM IST on October 20, once Navami ends
Maa Mahagauri Mantra, Stuti and Dhyana With Meaning

- Mool mantraOm Devi Mahagauryai Namah - Om, salutations to the Goddess Mahagauri
- StutiYa Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Mahagauri Rupena Samsthita, Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah - to the Goddess who dwells in all beings as Mahagauri, salutations again and again

The takeaway
Durga Ashtami 2026 is Monday, October 19 in India, the Gulf, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, and Sunday, October 18 in the USA, Canada and the UK.
