Same birthday, three cities

A person born in Chennai at 6:30 AM on 15 August 1990 has the Janma Tithi Krishna Dashami and the birth star Rohini. Here is where their birthdays fall if the family lives in Chennai, London or Toronto. Dates that differ from Chennai are highlighted - each comes from that city's own sunrise.

How the dates are calculated

The calculator finds the tithi (the Moon's distance from the Sun in 12° steps), the Nakshatra and the lunar month at your moment of birth, with the Lahiri ayanamsa used by Indian Panchangs. Lunar months are counted new Moon to new Moon (Amanta) and named from the Sun's sign; the Purnimanta name used in North India is shown alongside. For each year it then searches your birth month for the day whose local sunrise falls in your tithi, and your solar month for the day whose sunrise falls in your Nakshatra. A solar month starts on the day of the Sankranti when it falls before sunset, the Tamil rule.

Sunrise and every tithi time come from the same engine as our Panchang, checked against Drik Panchang, so the day the calculator gives always matches the Panchang for your city.

Which birthday should you keep?

Many families in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and the north keep the tithi birthday; Tamil and Malayali families usually keep the star birthday. Plenty of people keep both - a temple visit on the star day and a family puja on the tithi. Whichever you follow, it is the traditional day to begin a vrat, offer daan or start a remedy, because the Moon is back where it stood when you were born. To read what that Moon says about you, see your Moon sign and Nakshatra, and check the period of life you are in with the Dasha calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tithi birthday?
Your Janma Tithi is the lunar day (tithi) that was running when you were born, in its lunar month - for example Shravana Krishna Dashami. Each year your Hindu birthday falls on the day that tithi is in force at sunrise in that same month, which moves across the English calendar by up to three weeks from year to year.
What is a star (Nakshatra) birthday?
In Tamil Nadu, Kerala and much of South India a birthday is kept on the day your birth Nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra) rises at sunrise in the solar month you were born in - Aadi, Avani, Chithirai and so on. It is the day for an archana or abhishekam in your name at the temple.
Why is my Hindu birthday in the USA or UK different from India?
A tithi or Nakshatra is the same moment everywhere, but the day it is kept on depends on local sunrise. Sunrise in Toronto comes about ten and a half hours after sunrise in Chennai, so when a tithi begins in between, India keeps the birthday one day and Canada the day before or after. Converting the Indian date to your time zone does not fix this - the calculation has to be made for your city, which is what this tool does.
My Nakshatra comes twice in the same month. Which day is my birthday?
The Moon goes round all 27 Nakshatras in about 27.3 days, so in a 30 or 31 day solar month your star can rise twice. The widely followed Tamil custom is to keep the second occurrence; some Kerala families keep the first. The calculator shows the second as your birthday and names the first beside it, so you can follow your family's practice.
What happens to my tithi birthday in an Adhik Maas year?
When an Adhika (extra) lunar month repeats your birth month, someone born in an ordinary month keeps the birthday in the ordinary (Nija) month. If you were born in an Adhika month yourself, you keep it in that year's Adhika month when there is one, and in the ordinary month otherwise. The calculator applies this automatically.
What if the tithi does not touch sunrise this year?
Sometimes a short tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next (a kshaya tithi). The birthday is then kept on the day the tithi runs, and the calculator marks those years. When a long tithi spans two sunrises, the first day is used.
Do I need my birth time?
It helps. The tithi and Nakshatra each change roughly once a day, so for most people the date alone is enough - but if either changed on your birth day, the time decides which one is yours. Without a time the calculator uses noon and warns you when the birth day had a change.
