How to read your birth chart
Start with the Lagna: it is house 1, and the houses run in order from there. The 1st house is the self, the 2nd wealth and family, the 4th home and mother, the 5th children and learning, the 7th marriage and partnerships, the 9th fortune and dharma, the 10th career and the 11th gains. A planet's house shows the area of life it acts on; its sign shows how it behaves.
The Lagna and the Moon sign are read side by side in Jyotish. Planets marked ᴿ are retrograde - apparently moving backwards from Earth - which classical texts treat as strong but unconventional.
What the Navamsa adds
A planet that looks strong in the Rasi chart but falls in its debilitation sign in the Navamsa delivers less than promised, and the reverse is also true - which is why astrologers never judge a Kundli from D1 alone. The Navamsa is also the chart of marriage: the 7th house of the D9 and the planet that rules it describe the spouse. Your Atmakaraka and Darakaraka are read through it too.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a Janam Kundli?
- A Janam Kundli is the Vedic birth chart: a map of where the Sun, Moon, five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood in the sidereal zodiac at the moment you were born, arranged into twelve houses counted from your Lagna (Ascendant).
- What is the difference between the Rasi (D1) and Navamsa (D9) charts?
- The Rasi chart is the main birth chart. The Navamsa divides every sign into nine parts of 3°20′ and is the most important divisional chart: astrologers use it to judge marriage, the strength of each planet and the deeper promise of the birth chart.
- North Indian or South Indian chart - which should I use?
- They show exactly the same chart. The North Indian diamond keeps houses fixed and writes sign numbers in them, with the Lagna always at the top. The South Indian grid keeps signs fixed, with Pisces in the top-left corner, and marks the Lagna. Use whichever your family astrologer uses - the toggle remembers your choice.
- Does this use true or mean Rahu?
- Mean Rahu and Ketu, the default on Drik Panchang and in most Indian Panchangs. True (osculating) Rahu can differ by up to about 1.5°, which occasionally changes its Nakshatra pada but rarely its sign.
- How accurate is this Kundli?
- Planets use the Lahiri ayanamsa exactly as Drik Panchang applies it and agree with Drik's published charts to within half an arc-minute. The Lagna is the standard astronomical Ascendant of Swiss Ephemeris and Jagannatha Hora, checked on 300 random charts from 1900 to 2100 (Drik's own Lagna reads about 10 arc-minutes higher). In practice the accuracy of your Kundli depends on the accuracy of your birth time.
