Ashtakoot Guna Milan compares the bride's and groom's charts across eight parameters, or kootas, each carrying a fixed maximum score. The eight totals add to 36. Critically, the calculation is based on the janma nakshatra - the Moon's nakshatra at birth - and the Moon's rashi, not on sun signs and not on the full birth chart.

That is the first thing worth understanding about its limits. Guna Milan reads two data points from each chart. It says nothing about the seventh house, nothing about Venus, nothing about the Dasha periods either partner is running, and nothing about the eighth house that governs marital longevity. A complete matching examines all of those alongside the score, which is why a competent astrologer will rarely give you a number and stop.

When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered mutually neutralised - by far the most frequent resolution in practice. It is also considered cancelled or substantially reduced when Mars sits in its own sign or in exaltation, when Mars is aspected by Jupiter, when Mars occupies certain signs in particular houses, and after a certain age in some traditions.

The correct question is therefore never simply whether someone is Manglik. It is whether the dosha is active, how severe it is, and whether it is cancelled in this specific pairing - which requires looking at both charts properly rather than running a name through a calculator.
