Why your city changes the muhurat
The Hindu day runs from sunrise to sunrise, and a Tithi or Nakshatra begins at the same instant everywhere - which falls at a different hour of a different local day in Toronto, Dubai or Sydney. A Nakshatra that starts at 9 PM in Delhi starts at 11:30 AM in New York, so a muhurat can move to the previous day there, get shorter, or disappear.
The sky differs too. Jupiter and Venus must be visible for weddings and housewarmings, and near the horizon at higher latitudes they stay lost in the Sun's glare for longer: in 2027 Venus is set for about seven weeks in Delhi but more than five months in London. The finder works out these asta periods for your own city.
How the dates are calculated
For each day the finder computes local sunrise and the exact times the Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana change (Lahiri ayanamsa), then applies the ceremony's Panchang Shuddhi rules from Muhurta Chintamani and Dharmasindhu - month, weekday, Nakshatra, Tithi, Yoga, Karana, Chaturmas, Kharmas, Adhika Masa and the asta of Jupiter and Venus - the way Drik Panchang applies them. - What is a shubh muhurat?
- A muhurat is a window of time chosen so that the day's Panchang - Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and weekday - suits the work being started, and the Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Venus are in favourable condition. Each ceremony has its own rules: a griha pravesh needs a fixed Nakshatra and one of six lunar months, a wedding needs the Sun in a permitted sign and no Chaturmas, and so on.
- Why can't I just use the muhurat list from India?
- Because a muhurat is tied to local sunrise and to when the Tithi and Nakshatra change in your own time zone. Shifting India's dates by the time difference moves windows across midnight, keeps dates that no longer qualify and drops dates that do. Jupiter and Venus also set and rise on different dates in London or Toronto than in Delhi. This finder works the Panchang out for your city from scratch.
- How accurate is this muhurat finder?
- It reproduces Drik Panchang's published muhurat tables day by day. Compared on every day of 2025-2027 for Delhi, New York, London and Sydney, it matches all 4,380 days for each of the four ceremonies - which days have a muhurat, the reason a day is excluded, and every muhurat window to within two minutes (Drik prints whole minutes). Jupiter and Venus asta periods match Drik's for 143 of 143 periods checked from 2012 to 2027.
- What are Tara Bala and Chandra Bala?
- Personal checks on a muhurat. Tara Bala counts from your birth Nakshatra to the day's Nakshatra; the 3rd, 5th and 7th taras (Vipat, Pratyak, Naidhana) are avoided. Chandra Bala looks at the Moon's sign from your Moon sign; the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good, and the 2nd, 5th and 9th in the bright fortnight. The 8th - Chandrashtama - is avoided. Add family members and the finder marks which times are good for everyone.
